A couple of weeks ago I was asked to go to a prescreening of "Bridesmaids." From the previews I thought it looked pretty funny so I thought why not. My friend Courtney just recently got engaged so I asked her to go with me.

We got our popcorn and candy and sat down to watch the movie. My initial reaction going into this experience was that the movie was going to be a fairly typical chick flick. Oh how wrong I was!

The last time I laughed so hard was watching "The Hangover." It was perfectly inappropriate and flat out hilarious. If you've ever been in a wedding or are planning one, you will love this movie. It's a break from the norm and just gave me a chance to laugh at it all.

I would (and have already) recommend this movie to everyone! Get your bridesmaids together and all go see it! You will be quoting this movie forever!

My latest dress obsession is the new line of wedding dresses and gowns from the White by Vera Wang collection at David's Bridal. Until recently, a Vera Wang gown seemed far from attainable. Who really has $4,000 + sitting around to spend on something you'll wear for one day?

In 2010, TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com conducted a survey with 19,000 couples. The results concluded that the average amount a bride spent on her wedding dress was $1,099. With that being said, the majority of brides cannot afford a luxury wedding dress.

My Colors

Hello my lovelies! Sorry for being MIA as of late, but as I'm sure you know work and other whirlwinds in life take over at times. I have been doing a lot of planning for my own wedding lately so I wanted to share with you bits and pieces of what I've been doing.

I've finally found a color palette that I'm in love with! Personally, I'm a big fan of having an entire palette to work with rather than just two colors. Sometimes focusing on two colors can be too matchy, matchy. I think opening it up to an array of colors can be more visually appealing and can let you do a lot more with your decor.

I am getting married in fall and didn't want to do the typical orange and brown theme so I came up with this updated fall, romantic/rustic palette. After many hours of perusing one of my favorite blogs - 100 Layer Cake (specifically their 'Inspiration Binder' section), I was able to put together a palate of my own from their creations. The picture above is what I came up with!

You CAN look hot! Find a dress that helps you exude confidence and makes you feel great. The Flashdance

The vows have been said, the toasts have been made and the cake has been cut. Now it is time for one of the most time honored traditions at a wedding - the Bride and Groom's first dance as a married couple.

I have been told by many newlyweds that the first dance is really the first opportunity that you and your spouse get some alone time and it really is a special moment for you. So, why on Earth would you want this beautiful moment ruined by chatter throughout the reception venue as everyone is forced to watch you sway to "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by Poison?

I believe that the first dance should be done to a song that has meaning to the Bride & Groom but is also appropriate for the typically formal event. It should have a tempo that you and your partner feel comfortable moving to as well as a pleasant melody for the crowd to enjoy. Just a FYI - Grandma Ruth is not going to enjoy hearing "Your Love Is My Drug" by Ke$ha.

Some of the most memorable first wedding dances that I have seen incorporate some sort of memory or event that correlates to the song choice. A part co-worker of mine did hers to Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" because that was the first song she and her husband ever danced to - and it worked for them. It had a more upbeat tempo that they promenaded to around the dance floor but it was perfect for them and everyone in the banquet hall felt that.

The following top ten list should only be used as a guide! Like I have been saying, make sure the song means something to you and your mate on your special day! This list is just some of the most romantic songs I've ever heard and usually gets the point across that you're in love and you're going to stay that way for a long, long time! Congrats on the upcoming nuptials!

Soo more big news from me! Finally, after two years of a long distance relationship, I've made the big move to Chicago! The distance made things more difficult in my relationship, especially the wedding planning bit, but it all worked out in the end.

Unfortunately, it took me losing my job to get here but I made it either way. Now the next struggle...being unemployed and planning a wedding! It's scary as hell, I'm not going to lie. I'll be sure to keep you updated as I go along and share any cost saving tips I come across :)

Love these oversized rosettes! I've seen them on pillows and shirts but never on chairs! I think they are such a cute and creative way to dress them up!

I found this rosette tutorial online for making a pillow. I think it could be easily translated into chair decor (minus the pillow part) and you can use whatever fabric you like. I believe the ones above have rosettes made of felt. Happy crafting!

Real California Wedding: Carly & Chip on The Bride's Cafe. I'm really enjoying the florals in this wedding. They are simple and so springy! Make sure to take an extra look at the bridesmaid dresses. They are Vera Wang and the color is "winter taupe." So beautiful!

Parking Garage Wedding by Hannah Bergman on Style Me Pretty. This wedding is a burst of sunshine with bright orange against white and brown! Soooo creative and fun! There are lots of great details in this wedding so it's hard to just name one of my favorites! I especially love the hurricane glasses and white pumpkins lining the aisle way! Nice touch!

I just so happen to be shopping a week or so ago at Somerset in Troy, Michigan and I came across this lovely wedding dress exhibit in the middle of the mall! It featured actual wedding gowns from famous films like The Duchess and Emma. It was so cool to see dresses that were worn by actresses like Keira Knightly and Gwyneth Paltrow!

Here's a little about the dresses in the exhibit:

"The dresses in this exhibition were all designed and made for the screen but adhere closely to the period they are set in. The costumes also reflect the personalities of each character and that character's role in the story. Most of the costumes follow the tradition of white weddings. Note how the dresses particularly rely on contrasts of fabric, texture, pattern, and nuances of tone for their decorative effects. The off white color of most of the dresses is period correct before the invention of bleach and optical brighteners. Very white fabrics however would glare out under the lights used in filming so even modern dresses would be made slightly off white."

I'm sorry I've been gone for the past week, but I took a much needed life break. It was so great to get away from it all and turn the computer off. I highly suggest doing it sometime if you can :)

I have some really amazing news to share with you....I'm OFFICIALLY getting married on October 1, 2011! I've set my date and booked my venue! For real, for real! I truly feel like a bride-to-be now!

I was so scared to make a decision regarding anything because that meant that leg of the journey was over. Once you make a decision you have to stop looking and move on to the next step and that first step is gone forever! I thought I would book the venue and put the money down then immediately start researching new places and regret my decision.

Turns out, I don't feel that way at all! I'm so content with everything. I feel relieved and am really glad that Drew and I took the time to research venues and decide what was really important to us. Our venue is PERFECT for us and I'm completely in love with it. Now we can really start to venture down the road that is wedding planning, together, hand in hand.

PS - Don't you adore the picture above? As soon as I saw this picture by Yan Photography I was in awe! Her work is amazing and you should check out all her equally inspiring images on her blog and website.

PPS - We went with Mill Creek Barns in Watervliet, Michigan. We met in Michigan and love the Midwest, especially in the fall, so it was perfect us! And you know how I feel about barns ;)

Atlanta, March 8, 2010 – Get Married Media—a national tri-media wedding lifestyle resource (on TV, online, in print)—today announced the results of its recent online bride survey of more than 1,500 brides. Even in today’s soft economy, budget-conscious brides are committed to creating their dream wedding. Get Married’s survey reveals that 92 percent of brides surveyed are personally paying for some portion of their wedding, underscoring that purchase decisions are made on elements that most impact and reflect her unique bridal style.

“More than ever, we’re seeing brides personally invested in the wedding planning process—both emotionally and financially—changing the paradigm decision making dynamic, putting the bride in a creative driver’s seat,” said Stacie Francombe, founder and CEO of Get Married media. “The wedding planning process has really become a partnership between brides and wedding professionals, as they work together to determine the design and style within a defined budget. The outcome is as phenomenally beautiful as they are inspirational.”

Who is today’s engaged bride-to-be? Following is a look at key results of Get Married’s bride survey, offering insight into style and spending trends.

Budget surprise: While 44 percent of brides claim that establishing the wedding budget is the most surprising wedding planning stress, 70 percent are either pleasantly surprised with their budget or feel like everything they want will fit into their budget.

Personally invested: The top items that brides are personally purchasing are jewelry (wedding bands), invitations and wedding favors.

Planning resources: Brides are resourceful, and said wedding websites (82 percent) and wedding magazines (58 percent) are the most helpful in wedding planning. Other key planning resources for brides include advice from friends and family (45 percent), wedding television programs (36 percent), real wedding images (36 percent) and advice from wedding professionals (20 percent).

‘Tis the season: More than half of brides surveyed said the season was the most important element when choosing a wedding date, as it sets the tone and backdrop for a wedding.

Bridal style: However a bride defines her personal style, the survey shows that brides continue to opt for a classic and traditional wedding, and most brides described her wedding as elegant and romantic.

Family time: While couples are having longer engagements, the survey reveals that they are spending quality time with each other’s families as if they already married: 70 percent of couples spent the 2009 holidays together with both families.

Grooms: While today’s groom might not be involved in every detail of the wedding planning, they do have strong opinions about the overall feel of the weddings. Grooms have the strongest opinion about the venue, caterer, music and photography.

What is lucite?

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic. Chemically, it is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. It is sold under many trade names, including Policril, Plexiglas, Gavrieli, Vitroflex, Limacryl, R-Cast, Per-Clax, Perspex, Plazcryl, Acrylex, Acrylite, Acrylplast, Altuglas, Polycast, Oroglass, OptixLucite and is commonly called acrylic glass, simply acrylic, perspex or plexiglas.

PMMA is often used as a light or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It is an economical alternative to polycarbonate (PC) when extreme strength is not necessary. It is often preferred because of its moderate properties, easy handling and processing, and low cost, but behaves in a brittle manner when loaded, especially under an impact force, and is prone to scratching compared to glass.

The Park Hyatt at The Bellevue is located at 200 South Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA on the Avenue of the Arts. It's right in Center City Philadelphia and is conveniently located near shopping, dining and lots of hotels. Check out some of the history of the building by clicking here.

I got a chance to tour the wedding venue space and I must say it's absolutely stunning. When you come here, you feel like you've stepped into another time and place. Everything is elegant and has a historic feel to it.

Before you walk into the two-tiered Grand Ballroom, you pass by the cast-iron circular staircase. When I entered the ballroom I was in awe of the architecture and fixtures. The room is simply gorgeous, fit for a king and queen.

Have you ever felt like you need to adhere to an imaginary set of rules regarding your wedding because someone said so or at least you think they did? I bet you’ve picked up so many pieces of wedding rules and bits of advice throughout time that you don’t even know where they came from. Do you constantly feel stressed because of these ‘rules’ and feel like if you don’t stick to them everything is going to go wrong?

Examples of such rules…

You HAVE to have your engagement pictures taken immediately after the engagement or else it wont mean as much.

You HAVE to spend at least $30,000 on your wedding otherwise it will turn out like crap.

The bride’s parents HAVE to pay for this and the groom’s parents HAVE to pay for that because it’s tradition.

You HAVE to get married in this church regardless if you're currently practicing or not.

You HAVE to have your wedding in this state because it’s the most convenient for your family.

Let’s face it – you don’t HAVE to do anything you don’t want to. You should not feel obligated to do something just because someone said so, regardless of where you heard it. Mind you that some of these rules are actually relevant and are there because they are tried and true. You’ll want to follow advice about when to send out invitations and when to get your dress altered by etc. Just know which ones are important to follow and which to take with a grain of salt.

Some of the best wedding trends come from breaking some rules here and there. Think about the mismatching bridesmaids for example and the DIY, let’s save some money so we can actually have some left for a down payment on a house kind of couple. These weren’t the norm and didn’t follow traditional thought, but they’re doing things they want to do and are way cooler and more original for doing so.

Do you love hearts? I know I do! I'm like a mosquito drawn to a bug zapper when it comes to heart related items! Let me give you an example...Target always has their Valentine's Day stuff out and I went there yesterday. Before I even knew what I was doing I was all over their display of heart pillows and table cloths and glasses....so I'm a little obsessed?!

Anyway, I came across this DIY heart mobile project on The Haystack Needle - which is an amazing blog by the way. You definitely need to check it out if you haven't already. I love the colors she used in the above pictures and it just looks so cute!

This project could easily be translated into a creative seating chart for your wedding or event! Hang some string across a wall with each top heart listing the table number. Use baker's twine or some other kind of unique string. Then hang a strand of hearts with the guest's name on each one. If you want the hearts to be removable, attach with some cute paperclips or pins. See my lovely (not really, go ahead and laugh!) picture below to give you a better understanding of what I mean.

Umm, yeah I made this in Paint so laugh if you want. And yes, I know there are two Bobs seated at table 2...

This is a creative way to decorate a wall or bare space at the reception. It's also makes a fun focal point for your guests to look at rather than a traditional seating chart or poster. Have fun!

Let's face it - the focal point of a wedding is usually the bride. Sorry grooms! You're wonderful and just as much a part of this wedding as the bride, but how can you take your eyes away from a heavenly vision in white?

The bride's look takes careful and meticulous planning. So much time is put into coming up with the perfect look. One of the difficulties I struggle with is choosing between timeless and trendy, especially when choosing wedding veils.

When I think of timeless style I think of a traditional blusher or a classic fingertip veil like the one above. Timeless veils are simple, elegant and understated. They let you focus on the detail of the dress and other accessories rather than drawing attention to the veil itself.

Trendy veils tend to be more of a statement piece like the birdcage veil with floral detail pictured above. This type of veil really becomes the focal point of the bride’s look. These types of veils usually call for a more modern and simple dress.

I’m a fan of both timeless and trendy. It’s all about pulling together a streamlined, cohesive look. Make sure they veil complements your dress as well as your face shape. Follow these simple style rules and you can pull either of them off.

So I've been reading about this new program called, "Poladroid." Poladroid turns your regular pictures into Polaroids! It's free to download and extremely easy to use. Simply drag and drop your picture onto the Poladroid icon and voila! Of course Polaroid cameras are still fun, but this is a fun and easy way to transform your digital photos into something special.

Martha Stewart Weddings Escort Cards

While researching more about the program I came across this really creative idea on Martha Stewart Weddings. For this bride's wedding she used pictures of each guest and turned them into Polaroids using Poladroid. Then she hung them with these really cute mini hangers which you can purchase on Etsy. So unique and personalized. Taking the extra time to make something like this will really impress your guests and help them to feel like they are part of your big day.

Wedding Polaroids on Conversation Pieces

Some more ways to feature Polaroids at your wedding! Display your favorite pictures of you and your groom. Here are some really fun alternatives to plain clothespins: 1. Love Clothespins, 2. Red Heart Clothespins, 3. Mustache Clothespins.

Okay so here are the ones that I created using Poladroid!!

Make escort cards with your guests pictures! If you're having a smaller, intimate wedding this would be really easy to do! If you have 300+ guests, this might not be for you. Drag and drop your guests picture into Poladroid. Next, hand write (if your handwriting is cute!) or digitally add guests name and/or table numbers. The simplest and most universal way to do what I did above was copy and paste Poladriod photo into Paint (or Paintbrush for Mac users), then add a text box to bottom of the Polaroid pic. I used the "Love Letter" font from Dafont.com. Click here to download the font for free!

**PS - Jessica is not naked. I picked a photo of her in a strapless dress and the Poladroid program crops out part of your pic so beware when you're making yours. I thought this was funny so I had to share :)

Another idea I had was to create themed table Polaroids. If you like the idea of naming the tables rather than numbering them, you can do what I did above. It was easy for me to find pictures of Drew and I in different places we've visited. The one above is from Atlantic City, so Atlantic City could be one table's theme and so on!

I really enjoy DIY projects, however, some can be quite difficult and can end up costing you more money! From now on I'm going to have a "Doable DIY" feature with a breakdown of how you actually make things (or a link to show you how!). These will have my stamp of approval for doable-ness!

The "Wedding Ideas That Sparkle" feature is by far my favorite snippet from Martha Stewart's Weddings winter 2010 magazine! I love the unique palette of pale pink, gold, bronze and silver with the star theme. It's so glam! I love it! Here are some fun and doable DIY projects from the Martha Stewart feature below!

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: Easy.

WARNING: You may get sick of glitter and have in your carpet forever!

Sparkly 3D hanging stars: Purchase rice paper stars from somewhere like AsianIdeas.com. Your best bet to get the glitter to stick is probably spray glue. Make sure to use fine glitter! It will look much fancier than big ol' regular chunky glitter. Hang with clear fishing wire from the ceiling!

Crescent moon and stars photo booth: Make a crescent moon out of foam board. Spray with glue and cover with glitter. Hang the moon with clear fishing wire. Add a few glittered stars too! Place a chair behind the crescent moon for guests to sit on for pics!

Star floor runner: Cut out various sized stars, sprinkle with fine glitter and tape them along the aisle way!

Gold star napkin holders: Cut out a 5 inch paper star and make a slit in the center. Slip folded napkin into the slit!

J.Crew Spring 2010 Preview

I'm sure you're all aware of my obsession with J.Crew, but I have never been in love with their wedding dresses until now! I have forever adored their bridesmaids dresses, but I found the choices for the bride were always a bit bland. That was my old thinking before I discovered J.Crew's Spring 2010 collection!

The dresses in the Spring 2010 collection are spot on! They still feature that signature minimalistic style that J.Crew does so well, but they've added perfect intricate details to make the garments far more interesting. The theme in this collection seems to lean towards asymmetry and Grecian draping. If you look closely you'll see that even the dresses with straps are slightly asymmetrical in the most beautiful way. I think the one shouldered look is going to be very popular in the upcoming year and is a perfect medium for any bride who is debating between strapless and a gown with straps.

After yesterday's post about wedding overload, I felt inspired to come up with a simple board. The overall feel is modern with clean lines and colors. I love black and white with a pop of yellow. Wedding Overload

Do you ever feel like you're on wedding overload? Do you obsessively search blogs, magazines and google things for your wedding until your brain feels like it's going to explode? I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm not alone on this one. Brides are inherently obsessive, thus the title of my blog, but sometimes I think we can get a little TOO carried away.

I think the reason for our obsessiveness is that we've been thinking about this day literally forever or at least since we can remember. We want our wedding day to wow everyone including ourselves so we search and search for the things to make our day even more special until we're exhausted and sick of all things wedding.

Obviously, this is bad. This is not how you should feel about one of the happiest days of your life! But in reality, we all reach this point at sometime or another (or multiple times!). So how can we deal with it and combat our obsessiveness while not checking out of wedding planning completely?

My advice is - take a freaking break. Don't google another dang thing! You are not always going to find a picture or example of the exact decor item or bridesmaid dress you want! Put the computer down and turn it off. A lot of my favorite wedding blogs update three or four times a day it seems, so I feel the need to stay caught up.

Eventually, I'm staring at things all day that don't look anything like what I want for my wedding and the vision of what I really want is blurred. By searching the internet like a mad woman everyday, you're probably losing some of your initial vision for your wedding and you become drained of your uniqueness/creativeness.

I'm not saying never go on another wedding blog, I'm just saying - take a break once in a while. It will all be there when you come back. Use that time to refocus on what your perfect wedding will be. How do you want the venue to look? What do you want the over ambiance to be like? What are some interests of you and your fiance that you want to show through in your wedding? What makes you unique? Write these down and make a little outline so you can refer back to it when you feel you're lost in wedding obsessiveness.

Refocus, THEN come back to your wedding research/planning. I promise that you will be a much happier person for doing so and your event will turn out so much better.

Once Wed's DIY Fabric Poms. I love these so much I literally want to make these right now! This is really an easy DIY project. I guarantee that you can pull it off even if you aren't a naturally inclined crafty person. They are just so pretty! Fabric poms are perfect wedding decor! I particularly enjoy the color palette of the ones on Once Wed's blog.

100 Layer Cake's Colorboard #25 - Holiday Glam. This is such a lovely and versatile color inspiration board! I love the idea of having a color palette consisting of more than one or two main colors because it lets you get creative and makes the decor more unique.

All Things Lovely - Snow and Bark Inspiration Board. I love inspiration boards, as you may already know, but I'll say it again - I freaking love them! They inspire you - they don't give you all the answers - but they are a wonderful way to figure out what the overall feel for your wedding can be. This board on All Things Lovely is a perfect representation of a romantic natural, winter wedding. Although everyone says they want to be a June bride, prices sure are cheaper in the winter so take another look at this board and be inspired!

Ruffled Blog's Burlap and Vintage Tablescapes. Dang - you're venue package includes white linens and you don't want to spend more money if you don't have to! But white is too plain and you want to jazz up a boring ol' table! Sound like you? I suggest taking a look at Ruffled Blog's post about using burlap in your tablescape. An inexpensive way to really put a rustic spin on your whited out table linens!

The Bride's Cafe - Sweet and Saucy Shop + JL Designs. Simple details can enhance your event so much. This is a perfect, perfect example of using thoughtful pieces in your reception table decor! This feature showcases some a great details using feminine pink florals and some white lace. Love it!

Style Me Pretty's Vintage Wedding by Justin and Mary. The bride in this feature is simply stunning. Her look is a perfect vintage, classic style. I love her red lipstick and red heels! So beautiful!

I felt really inspired to come up with a winter wedding inspiration board after wrapping Christmas presents and drinking hot cocoa! The color palette of gold, chestnut and white create a warm winter feel to your big event. There are so many ways you can incorporate these colors throughout every detail. This palette seems very natural and earthy but is fancied up by adding gold. These pictures really encompass my thoughts of incorporating winter and the holidays into a beautiful wedding.

Venue Tour {The Blue Dress Barn}

Blue Dress Barn in Millburg, MI (halfway between Chicago and Detroit). This is the entrance to the barn with a lovely hand painted sign.

Ceremony location between the silos (back of the barn). Notice the deck above with chairs and candles!

Looking out at the entrance of the barn. To the left you will see the bar. It's not pictured, but on the right hand side is the small stage and the dance floor.

If you were to walk into the barn this is what you would see. All tables and chairs come with the venue as well as these adorable lights and lanterns if you'd like them up. On the right hand side there are men's and women's restrooms. They are really nice and I believe there were around three stalls in each. *Don't the string lights look like little hearts? They weren't in the shape of hearts but the picture came out like that! How cute!

This is the fire pit! There are all these vintage benches and picnic tables set around the area. It's behind the barn and ceremony location. Perfect for smores!! The guest parking is off to the right from here.

Adorable podium for your guest book! There are so many cute little extras that come with this venue. You can also rent blue mason jars from them!

The Blue Dress Barn was the very first wedding venue I toured! I love it so much! It's owned and operated by the same people, Kirby and Amelia, who run Millcreek Barns. Click here to see my previous post from the venue tour of Millcreek Barns.

Kirby and Amelia bought this barn for their very own wedding originally! They fixed it up and made it into what it is today! Soo impressive! They are really lovely people and the price for this venue is amazing and includes so much. The only drawback is the location. There are plenty of hotels in the surrounding area but not as many things to do if you were leaning towards a city wedding.
